A guide to uninstall Zotero from your PC

This page contains thorough information on how to uninstall Zotero for Windows. It is written by Corporation for Digital Scholarship. More info about Corporation for Digital Scholarship can be found here. Please open https://www.zotero.org if you want to read more on Zotero on Corporation for Digital Scholarship's page. Zotero is typically installed in the C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero directory, depending on the user's option. You can uninstall Zotero by clicking on the Start menu of Windows and pasting the command line C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\uninstall\helper.exe. Note that you might receive a notification for admin rights. zotero.exe is the programs's main file and it takes close to 249.35 KB (255336 bytes) on disk.

You will find in the Windows Registry that the following data will not be uninstalled; remove them one by one using regedit.exe:

• HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\zotero
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Zotero 5.0.95 (x86 en-US)
• HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Zotero

Use regedit.exe to remove the following additional registry values from the Windows Registry:

• HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache\D:\Zotero\zotero installation\zotero.exe.ApplicationCompany
• HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Local Settings\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\MuiCache\D:\Zotero\zotero installation\zotero.exe.FriendlyAppName

A way to uninstall Zotero with the help of Advanced Uninstaller PRO

Zotero is a program released by Corporation for Digital Scholarship. Sometimes, users want to erase this application. This can be hard because doing this manually requires some knowledge regarding removing Windows programs manually. The best EASY way to erase Zotero is to use Advanced Uninstaller PRO. Take the following steps on how to do this:





1. If you don't have Advanced Uninstaller PRO on your PC, add it. This is good because Advanced Uninstaller PRO is a very useful uninstaller and general tool to clean your computer.

• install Advanced Uninstaller PRO

2. Start Advanced Uninstaller PRO. Take some time to get familiar with Advanced Uninstaller PRO's interface and wealth of functions available. Advanced Uninstaller PRO is a very good Windows optimizer.

3. Press the General Tools button


4. Press the Uninstall Programs button


5. All the programs existing on your PC will appear

6. Navigate the list of programs until you locate Zotero or simply click the Search field and type in "Zotero". If it exists on your system the Zotero program will be found very quickly. Notice that after you click Zotero in the list of programs, the following information about the program is shown to you:

• Safety rating (in the left lower corner). This explains the opinion other users have about Zotero, from "Highly recommended" to "Very dangerous".
• Reviews by other users - Press the Read reviews button.
• Technical information about the application you wish to uninstall, by clicking on the Properties button.

For instance you can see that for Zotero:

• The publisher is: https://www.zotero.org
• The uninstall string is: C:\Program Files (x86)\Zotero\uninstall\helper.exe

7. Click the Uninstall button. A confirmation window will show up. Confirm the removal by pressing the Uninstall button. Advanced Uninstaller PRO will uninstall Zotero.


8. After uninstalling Zotero, Advanced Uninstaller PRO will ask you to run an additional cleanup. Click Next to proceed with the cleanup. All the items that belong Zotero that have been left behind will be found and you will be able to delete them. By removing Zotero with Advanced Uninstaller PRO, you are assured that no Windows registry entries, files or folders are left behind on your system.

Your Windows computer will remain clean, speedy and ready to take on new tasks.
