A guide to uninstall Git from your computer

Git is a Windows application. Keep in mind that you might receive a notification for administrator rights. The program's main executable file occupies 44.86 KB (45940 bytes) on disk and is titled git-askpass.exe.

Git is composed of the following executables which take 3.35 MB (3517552 bytes) on disk:

  • unins000.exe (2.97 MB)
  • git-askpass.exe (44.86 KB)
  • xmlcatalog.exe (51.66 KB)
  • xmllint.exe (128.73 KB)
  • git-fsmonitor--daemon.exe (44.52 KB)

If planning to uninstall Git you should check if the following data is left behind on your PC.

Usually the following registry keys will not be cleaned:
  • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Git_is1


A way to uninstall Git from your computer using Advanced Uninstaller PRO

Git is a program offered by The Git Development Community. Some computer users choose to uninstall this application. Sometimes this can be difficult because removing this manually requires some experience related to removing Windows programs manually. One of the best SIMPLE way to uninstall Git is to use Advanced Uninstaller PRO. Take the following steps on how to do this:





1. If you don't have Advanced Uninstaller PRO already installed on your Windows PC, add it. This is a good step because Advanced Uninstaller PRO is one of the best uninstaller and all around utility to take care of your Windows system.

  • download the program by pressing the green DOWNLOAD button
  • set up Advanced Uninstaller PRO
2. Run Advanced Uninstaller PRO. Take your time to get familiar with Advanced Uninstaller PRO's interface and number of tools available. Advanced Uninstaller PRO is a powerful system optimizer.

3. Press the General Tools category

4. Click on the Uninstall Programs button

5. All the applications existing on your computer will appear

6. Navigate the list of applications until you find Git or simply click the Search feature and type in "Git". If it is installed on your PC the Git app will be found automatically. Notice that when you click Git in the list of programs, the following information regarding the program is made available to you:


  • Safety rating (in the lower left corner). The star rating explains the opinion other users have regarding Git, ranging from "Highly recommended" to "Very dangerous".
  • Opinions by other users - Press the Read reviews button.
  • Technical information regarding the app you are about to remove, by pressing the Properties button.

  • The uninstall string is: C:\Program Files\Git\unins000.exe
7. Press the Uninstall button. A confirmation page will appear. accept the uninstall by pressing the Uninstall button. Advanced Uninstaller PRO will automatically uninstall Git.

8. After uninstalling Git, Advanced Uninstaller PRO will offer to run an additional cleanup. Press Next to start the cleanup. All the items of Git which have been left behind will be detected and you will be able to delete them.
